When an architect has an opportunity to refurbish a historic classic home, you have the burden of all other architects critiquing the final product, and demanding the builders close attention to details. Stanley and Thea Sawicki had a vision to restore and add to their 1953 Usonian style residence. They brought to Thomas DuBose & Associates, Inc. the original plans designed by Lewis Martin, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Upon inspection of the existing home, we found the simple classic materials: brick, Cyprus siding and wood shake roof to be in fragile condition. The shakes were in constant shade causing moisture-related problems. The siding was chemically cleaned several years ago causing the grain in the wood to raise and attracting even more dirt. We also found wood products near the ground and in high exposed areas that were rotting.
After researching all the possible corrections, we recommended a metal roof,
completely sanding down all the wood surfaces, tuck-pointing the masonry and
replacing the rotted wood. The sanding of the siding allowed the final finish
to bring out the rich natural wood tones. The aged copper metal roof became
the perfect solution for the low pitch and the wood setting.
The Sawicki's second design challenge was to create more living space, plus add a spa room. The deterioration of the series of patio doors off the existing living room became the logical place for the addition. We removed the doors and replaced them with a new stained glass divider wall, complete with bench and storage shelving, all in the "Wright" character. The addition became a cathedral ceiling of exposed wood planks, interior and exterior brick walls, and it features mitered glass detailing. The high glass wall brings light through the new glass divider and transmits a warm glow in the new dining room.
An existing den across from the master bedroom became the natural location
for the spa. By reshaping the gallery wall common with the den, we were able
to install a sauna, hot tub, plus have room for exercise equipment. The room
utilizes custom ceramic tile on the floor, and again, mitered glass, which
allows a view to the gallery.
The finished product adheres to the original simplicity and historic beauty
of this warm and distinct Usonian residence.
